Here are the core building blocks: Enclosure / Cabinet The structural shell that protects all internal components from the environment. Rated by NEMA Type (1=indoor general purpose, 4=watertight, 4X=corrosion-resistant, 12=industrial, 13=oil-tight) or IEC IP code. Must meet UL 508A dimensional and temperature-rise requirements. Main Disconnect / Circuit Breaker The primary means of isolating the panel from utility power. UL 508A requires the disconnect handle to be operable with the door closed and lockable in the OFF position (LOTO compliance). Must be rated for the available fault current at the service point. Surge Protective Device (SPD) NEC 2023 Article 409 now mandates SPDs in industrial control panels. Often DIN-rail mounted alongside PLC Overcurrent Protection (Fuses & Breakers) Branch-circuit fuses (UL 248) and circuit breakers (UL 489) protect individual circuits. Component SCCR values determine which devices can be used together in a coordinated system. Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) Adjustable-speed drives control motor speed and torque by varying frequency and voltage. VFD panels require careful heat management — many include integral ventilation or air conditioning. Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Operator touchscreen or display panel providing real-time process visualisation, alarm management, and data logging.
